Aka Warren Johansson.
In my opinion the greatest ever gay scholar in the American movement(see Warren Johansson). He told me that 23 of his relatives had degrees from the Universities of Pennsylvania and/or Columbia at both of which he himself studied, graduating from Penn in 1955 at the top of his class. But his PhD work at Columbia in pursuit of the PhD in Russian, with a dissertation intending to be on Pushkin (the greatest Russian poet, who incidentally was gay) was interrupted by the brutal murder of his father, the most popular and generous pharmacist in Philadelphia. This incident was widely publicised and the three teenage culprits were originally sentenced to death. The trauma that Warren experienced nearly caused a nervous breakdown, after which he changed his name and became a leading gay activist and was ostracised by his family.
